Knowing the Difference Between Mold & Water Damage

Mold and water damage share different similarities, making it a challenge to identify what type of problem you’re working with in your home. Water damage and mold both happen where water leaks, but there are different signs you can use to help distinguish between the two.

Signs of Water Damage

If your home has a small, clean water leak, that area will become water-damaged over time. But if you can’t see the leak itself, it can be hard to know if you have one. Look for signs like warped wood flooring, vinyl flooring, or wallpaper or paint that is bubbling or peeling. Beyond that, you can look for yellow, brown, or copper-colored stains that appear around the source of that water leak.

But just because you don’t see signs of a leak doesn’t mean you don’t have one. Another thing to watch is your water bill. A sudden increase or change in your monthly water bill could point to a leak.

Signs of Mold

Mold grows where moisture is present, and a water leak can provide a great source for mold growth. If you have an area in your home that is damp and moist, or has experienced a long-term water leak, then that area is susceptible to mold growth.

Unlike the look of water stains, look for areas that are white, blue, green, or black in color. Grout that has darkened is another sign that you might have mold growing. But if you don’t see mold in your home, check the areas you’re concerned about for a musty or pungent smell — including your heat or air conditioning. If you still don’t see signs of mold, watch for drastic changes in your health — like breathing issues or itching — that could be caused by mold.

Don’t try to remove mold yourself! If you’re worried about mold in your home, contact All Phase Restoration for mold testing. Once we figure out what type of mold you have, we can work to safely and thoroughly remove that mold from your home.
